These guidelines are for anyone who needs to record a class session whether this is recorded via Zoom, phone or any other medium.
Overview
- As of 10/5/2020, lessons can be recorded for all classes except where parental consent has been been declined.
- Your school team will provide you with a list of any students whose parents/guardians have declined consent.
- Classes should only be recorded when requested by coaches, SLs, APs, Heads of School, EDs or any member of the Teaching and Learning team.
- For any class that is recorded:
- Students should be instructed to set their Zoom names as their first names only.
- Teachers should never disclose educational information such as grades.
- Until further notice, recordings cannot be shared with external parties and cannot be shared via social media.
What
- Teachers cannot record Zoom sessions with students until they have received confirmation from their school teams that none of the students in each cohort have declined consent for recording.
- If any parent/guardian denies consent, then all classes that include those students can never be recorded; not even for internal purposes.
- Teachers should not record all classes by default.
- Classes should only be recorded when requested by coaches, SLs, APs, Heads of School, EDs or any member of the Teaching and Learning team.

Who can you share it with?
You can share the recordings with:
- Any other KIPP NJ/KIPP Miami staff for PD/academic purposes, including
- Sharing best practices so we can learn from our peers
- Watching video of ourselves teaching and reflecting with our coach on our practice
- Practicing in CTMs or other meetings
- Analyzing the impact of teacher practices on kids
- Training leaders and coaches
- Note: Classes should not be recorded to provide to students who were absent.
Until further notice, you cannot share the recordings with any external parties (i.e. anyone who is not a KIPP NJ/KIPP Miami staff member) and cannot be shared on any social media platform.
Storing Recordings
- You should not store and share recordings from Zoom's cloud since Zoom provides limited storage for recordings.
- Rather, you should download recordings to your computer, upload them to Google Classroom or Google Drive as needed, and then delete the files from Zoom’s cloud afterwards.

FERPA Guidance
- FERPA is a federal law that protects disclosure of educational information from a student record. This information includes:
- Student’s full names, addresses, phone numbers
- Student ID numbers
- Grades/test scores
- IEP education status
- In order to protect student privacy under FERPA regulations, you must ensure the following for any class that is recorded:
- Students should be instructed to set their Zoom names as their first names only.
- Staff should never disclose educational information during class.
