Purpose:
Using Google Multifactor Authentication, also known as Google 2-Step Verification (Google 2SV), adds an important layer of security to your Google account. The objective of 2SV is straightforward: to make it much more difficult for anyone other than you to access your accounts. It means that even if someone gets hold of your password, they still can’t sign in without a second form of verification. This extra step helps prevent account takeovers and keeps our information safe.
After you've enrolled into Google MFA, you can reduce Google MFA authentication prompts by checking "Don't ask again on this device" during your next Google login. Otherwise, you will be prompted every time you access Google services.
You can choose from the following authentication methods:
(These are listed in order of preference.)
- Google Authenticator app – Our recommended method for strong, reliable security. It generates a one-time passcode (OTP) on your device that you enter when signing in.
- Google MFA (2SV) Phone (SMS/Voice) – Receive a unique security code via text message or automated call to verify your identity and authorize sign-ins. This is the least secure option, so it should only be used if the other methods aren’t possible.
Generating Backup Codes
After enrolling in Google Multifactor Authentication (Google 2SV), you should Generate Backup Codes and store them in a SAFE place. Backup codes can be used to authenticate if you do not have access to your primary Google MFA authentication method. Learn how to use Backup Codes here.
Recommendations
- It’s highly recommended to generate Backup Codes and store them in a SAFE place after enabling Google MFA (2SV). These codes can be used to gain access to your account in the event you lose your primary authentication method.
- Set up your authentication method prior to enabling 2-Step verification on your account. If not, your first authentication method could be Text Message (SMS) or voice. It is highly recommended to user Google Authenticator as your primary authentication method.
