Okta MFA Enrollment: Google Authenticator - iOS Enrollment (iPhones/iPads)

Purpose:

This article provides instructions for enrolling in Okta Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) using the Google Authenticator app on iOS (iPhones/iPads) devices.  

Step 1:  Installing Google Authenticator - iOS (iPhone/iPads)

Note:  If you already have Google Authenticator installed, skip to Step 2:  Okta Account MFA Enrollment.

1. Open “Apple Store”, search for “Google Authenticator”, and tap “Get”.

   Note:  You may have to "Confirm" the app install.

2. Tap “Open” when the authenticator installation is complete.

   

3. Tap "Get started" on the "Stronger security with Google Authenticator" welcome screen.

   

4. You can choose from the following Google Authenticator profile options:

   1. Tap "Sign in" and tap "Continue":  Allows you to use your personal Google account (@gmail.com) or work account (@apps.teamschools.org or @kippmiami.org Google account) to store authenticator codes.

      Note:  If you already have codes synced to your account (personal or work) on another device, they will automatically migrate to your new device upon setup.

   2. Use Authenticator without an account:  Codes will not migrate over to a new device. 

      Note:  This method is not recommended.

   

5. You can add authentication codes after you've chosen an account to use.

   

   Congratulations!  You've successfully completed the first step in setting up MFA.

Step 2:  Okta Account MFA Enrollment

1. Navigate to the Okta Dashboard (https://kippnj.okta.com) on your computer and sign-in.

2. Click the drop-down menu on your account profile (top right) and select “Settings”.

   

3. Click "Edit Profile" and re-authenticate if prompted to edit your Okta account.

   

4. Locate the “Extra Verification” section.

5. Click “Set up” next to ONLY ONE verification method:  

   1. Google Authenticator - Recommend option
   2. Okta Verify
   3. SMS Authentication - Least secure

   Note: Google Authenticator is the preferred authentication method.  ONLY ONE verification method is needed.

   

6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete your Multi-factor Authenticator set up method.

Step 3:  Enrolling into Okta MFA:  Google Authenticator

After completing the steps in Step 2: Okta Account MFA Enrollment above, you will be guided through the remaining setup steps.

Follow the on-screen prompts as follows:

3. Prompt 3

   

4. Prompt 4:  Retrieve your verification code from your device, insert it here, and click verify.

   

After successfully completing the on-screen steps, you will be taken to your Okta account.

Okta MFA Enrollment is complete!  Be prepared to use MFA when you log in next.
